When it comes to sales and VIP events, Chanel holds their cards pretty close to their chest. Not to mention, the markdowns, dates, inventory, and participating boutiques are constantly changing.

In the past, Chanel has held two types of sales events each year: private sales and bi-annual sales.

Chanel private sales, also known as VIP Sales or Friends and Family Sales, are exclusive events for Chanel’s loyal customers & VIPs.

These invite-only sales usually take place in both June and December, where select customers are given the opportunity to purchase seasonal Chanel products at discounted prices before these sale items are made available to the public during the bi-annual sale.

Simply put, VIPs get first access to the bi-annual sale (read more on this below) before it opens to the public.

Previously, this highly coveted event has allowed customers to purchase previous-season items at a discount of up to 50%, making it the best time to splurge on a luxury item from the brand.

The private sales are not advertised, so there’s no need to obsessively check the Chanel website.

Invitations are reserved for top-spending customers and those who have established strong relationships with their local SAs, or sales advisors/associates.

Set in an elegant and exclusive environment, VIPs can peruse and purchase pieces in a tranquil setting, away from the public eye.

Unlike the hustle and bustle of the bi-annual sale, the private sale exudes an air of sophistication and discretion.

In addition to these types of sales, VIP customers are invited to privately shop new collections before they are unveiled to the public.

Chanel Bi-Annual Sale

For the rest of us ~~peasants~~ non-VIPs (myself included *sigh*), there’s still hope for scoring a discounted pair of last season’s Chanel booties.

In addition to the private sale, Chanel also holds a bi-annual sale, also known as the semi-annual or end-of-season sale.

This event usually takes place immediately after the December and June VIP private sales, where the brand discounts select seasonal items from their current collections.

Unlike the private sale, the bi-annual sale is open to the public. However, it is also pretty hush-hush, and it’s really only advertised through word of mouth.

Chanel does not list what will be included in the sale beforehand, nor will they post items to purchase online through their website.

To access the sale, you must shop in person or purchase items through your SA (if you have one).

Having a relationship with an SA is not necessary, though, as you can walk right into any boutique and shop the sale.

Chanel’s bi-annual sale typically includes markdowns on seasonal items, including accessories, jewelry, shoes, and ready-to-wear. Seasonal bags and small leather goods may or may not be included.

The discounts have ranged from 20% to 40% off, although each boutique and sale may vary.

It’s also important to note that not every Chanel boutique participates in these sale events.

For example, during the December 2023 sale, New York’s Soho & Madison Ave locations did not participate. The Crystal and Wynn locations in Vegas and the Beverly Hills boutique also chose to opt-out.

Department stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks 5th Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s, also participate in the bi-annual sale.

However, in December of 2023, the newly opened Chanel counter boutique in Boston’s Saks 5th Ave chose not to participate (most likely because it just opened!) 🥲.

During the end-of-season sales mentioned above, discounted bags and leather goods are far and few between, and if they are on sale, they are going to be seasonal pieces.

So, if you have your heart set on a black Classic Flap bag or any other core Chanel style, sadly, this sale isn’t your best option for scoring Chanel at a discount.

Tips for Shopping a Chanel Sale

Create a wishlist. Take a look at last season’s inventory online, and make a mental (or physical) list of the pieces that catch your eye. Although each boutique’s inventory will vary, this will help you stay focused and not get overwhelmed by the available options.
Arrive early. As mentioned earlier, the available sale stock is limited, so I recommend arriving early to get the best deals. Going to a Chanel sale is not a walk in the park, especially if you live in a big city. The sale can get crowded and competitive, so dress comfortably (but chic, of course).
Check the items before purchasing. Since the products sold at Chanel sales are from previous collections, I suggest checking items thoroughly before making a purchase. Look for any defects or damages before buying the product.
Be prepared to make quick decisions. As mentioned before, Chanel’s private sales are competitive, and the stock is limited. You may not have too much time to think before purchasing. Be prepared to make quick decisions and grab what you like before someone else snags it!
